The Penrith fighter made history at Acer Arena on Sunday when he earned a third round TKO victory at the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s first Australian event. Watched by millions globally and a sold-out arena of 17,431 rabid Australian fans, UFC 110 continued the mixed martial arts promotion’s worldwide expansion plans. See more of the action from UFC 110 at Acer Arena MMA is considered by many to be the fastest growing sport in the world, and it is men like Te Huna who will win over Aussie audiences.
“It was unreal walking out there,” Te Huna told the Press after his fight. “It (felt) like there was 70,000 people out there. It was different to the 4000 I’m used to walking out in front of. “(Being in the octagon with the crowd cheering) just makes it so exciting because me and my brother (Tama) were brought up in a small country town in New Zealand. We were no athletes. “I had two left feet growing up and I always came last in athletics in school. “For me to achieve what I’ve achieved now is a big thing for me. “I’m proud of myself and my family and friends for supporting me all the way through.” Te Huna was the first fight on the historic event. Walking out to Lenny Kravitz’s Are You Gonna Go My Way, Te Huna looked focused for his UFC debut - the first of a four-fight contract.
In the octagon, standing across from his Croatian opponent Igor Pokrajac, Te Huna could not hide the smile that came to his face as the announcer called out his name and the crowd roared. Moments later, he was in for one of the hardest fights of his career.
“I didn’t have no nerves coming into that fight,” he said.
“Usually I’m nervous but I couldn’t get it out of first gear. I think he dropped me twice for me to realise I was in a fight and I had to do something about it, dig deep. “And we eventually dug deep and got the win. “I was just looking for opportunities, going with what he was giving me, hung in there.
“I thought it was going to finish in the first round but I just couldn’t get into it. I just wasn’t there. It happens.”
The Ultimate Fighting Championship makes its Australian debut in February 2010, and in anticipation of the event, the promotion has added a countrymen to the roster.
Australian MMA veteran Jamie Te Huna has signed a multi-fight deal with the UFC.
Te Huna, a 93kg fighter who trains at Elite Fight Gym with PRIDE veteran Mark Hunt, enters the UFC with an 11-4 career record and a current five-fight win streak. The past four have come via knockout, including a first-round KO of two-time UFC fighter Anthony Perosh at an event in Australia.
In fact, all but one of the six-year professional fighter's wins have come via stoppage. His two most recent losses, meanwhile, came to former UFC fighter James Lee and CFC champion and Judo stand-out Hector Lombard.
The UFC holds its first-ever Australian show, UFC 100, on Feb. 21 at Acer Arena in Sydney. Te Huna is expected to debut at the event.
Stay tuned for more information and updates on Jamie’s progress.
James TeHuna became the new CFC Light Heavyweight champion on Friday, 21 August in Sydney, Australia . He beat Anthony Perosh by knock out in the first round. Jamie fought his way through an 8 man elimination series beating Antony Rea in the first round at CFC 8 by knockout, then Priscus Fogagnolo in the 2nd round at CFC 9 by TKO.
The lead up to the title fight was not easy for Jamie, injuries can take their toll and although he looked pretty cool - he wasn’t." I don’t know about looking relaxed, I must be a pretty good actor! I had just come off four fights in the last 5 months so I was ready for this, apart from having injuries coming into these fights I just had to work around them and play it smart". In the 2nd last elimination round Jamie fought Priscus Fogaganolo and it was quite apparent that he was carrying an injured knee and this seamed to restrict his movement somewhat. When it came to his title fight opponent, Anthony Perosh had obviously studied footage of the Fogaganolo fight and within the opening exchanges of the fight targeted TeHuna’s left knee with quick leg kicks. Tehuna showed his true fighting spirit, pure strength and power by not letting the Brazilian Jui- Jutsiu black belt and former UFC fighter take him to ground, and held Perosh in the clinch while working the knees to the legs. After a strength sapping 2 minute clinch, TeHuna overpowered Perosh by breaking away and landing a big overhand right to knock him down and landing 2 more big rights on the mat to force referee Ivan Walton to stop the fight.
Congratulations to James TeHuna on an explosive win at CFC 9 which was held on the Gold Coast , Saturday 11 July 2009. James defeated Priscus Fogaganolo in the 2nd round with a hail of punches to an already bloodied Fogaganolo. Not one to train easily, James seriously injured his knee 4 days prior to the fight but proved that nothing can stop the warrior. Well done from all the fans and the EFG Team.
